BART gets $5M grant to improve worker safety

BART will soon get to work on developing new technology to keep its track-side workers safe.

The Federal Transit Administration awarded BART a $5 five million grant.

The hope is to create a device to automatically stop an approaching train if workers are on the tracks.

The project is expected to take two years.

In October of 2013, two workers were killed by a BART train while inspecting tracks near the Walnut Creek station.
