Tech mogul gets Supreme Court backing to build in Berkeley

BERKELEY, Calif. (KGO) -- A decision by the California Supreme Court is expected to make it easier to replace modest houses with mansions.

The justices ruled in favor of Bay Area software mogul Mitchell Kapor.

He has been trying to build a 10,000 square foot home in Berkeley since 2010.

The home includes a 10 car garage and would sit on a steep hill.

Opponents say the house would increase the risk of landslides and require huge retaining walls.

The court says just because a planned home is big, it does not mean that it should need further environmental review.

Opponents may appeal.
