OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- BART launched a new campaign on Tuesday aimed at preventing suicides.

The centerpiece of the initiative will be signs posted at various stations to encourage anyone struggling emotionally to call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.

First responders at BART stations will also be trained to identify signs of suicide.

BART asked local crisis support services for help creating the program.

"If someone is feeling alone depressed feeling in crisis there is help available for them they should not be in this by themselves," said Nancy Salamy with Alameda Crisis Support Services.

BART is also looking into printing the suicide lifeline number on tickets or permanent signs in stations.

There have been five deaths on the tracks so far this year.
