SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- Drivers going between San Francisco and Marin County are in for a major road closure the weekend after Memorial Day.

The four-day closure will shut down Doyle Drive from the Presidio to the Golden Gate Bridge.

The closure will allow workers to reconfigure lanes and connect the new roadway to the existing parkway.

When the road reopens, there will be separate roads and tunnels for north and southbound traffic.

"In order to make the connections between the tunnels, we have to take traffic off that existing roadway and demolish a portion of it so we can build a new roadway at the proper elevation," chief engineer Ron Richardson said.

The closure of Doyle Drive begins Thursday, May 28 at 10 p.m. and it will reopen Monday, June 1 at 5 a.m.
