A reroofing job on a typical home is going to start at about $8,000 and go up from there. And as if that isn't bad enough, Bay Area Consumers' Checkbook says there are plenty of roofers out there that will make the experience miserable.

"For example we had a home owner get bids from a roofing company for a typical re-roofing job. The price difference was from $5,400 to $20,000. So we're talking about a price difference for the same job, the same work of $14,000," said Kevin Basler, Consumers' Checkbook.

So if you need a new roof the lesson is clear. Get at least a few bids. And if you have the time get five.
