BURLINGAME, Calif. (KGO) -- The San Mateo-Hayward Bridge is closed while crews do repaving and maintenance work.

The bridge closed on Friday around 10 p.m. and is expected to reopen on Monday at 5 a.m.

As predicted, this has not caused any major problems on the roads. The last closure on Mother's Day weekend caused traffic jams across the Bay Area.

Caltrans believes this is because many people are out of town for the Memorial Day weekend, which means less people are on the Bay Area freeways.

"Traffic is still going to be heavy, but not as bad as last time," said local resident Tom Gough.

Caltrans recommends drivers consider going further north or south for their detour.

"The Bay Bridge and the Dumbarton Bridge were heavily used, but some southern routes through San Jose and Mountain View were free flowing. So there's more capacity down there," explained Bob Haus with Caltrans.

This is the first time crews have resurfaced the bridge in 48 years.
