Oakland City Council delays controversial housing vote

OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- The Oakland City Council delayed its controversial vote regarding the sale of city-owned land for a new high-rise near Lake Merritt.

The council's last attempt to vote on the sale was met by boisterous protests.

According to the Contra Costa Times, the council heard hours of testimony from residents until early Wednesday morning.

The proposed 24-story apartment tower would have nearly 300 units, including 30 set aside as affordable housing.

But opponents say the city needs more affordable housing for its residents and not luxury living space for the wealthy.
