SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- A new study shows baby boomers and Generation X are relying on debt to get through life.

Researchers say these groups see credit cards as a lifeline and use them as a survival tool.

Among Gen X-ers, 46 percent pay only part of their credit card balance each month, rolling over debt to the next month.

More than 20 percent say they don't feel they can start saving for retirement until their credit cards are paid off.
