Shots fired by San Jose police during pursuit of suspect

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Police are investigating a shooting incident that occurred Friday night during a police pursuit in San Jose.

Officers at 11:22 p.m. were on routine patrol in the area of the light rail station at San Carlos Street and Almaden Boulevard when they attempted to make contact with several subjects, police said.

One of the subjects took off running, and officers chased the man when he pulled a firearm and shot oat officers, police said.

An officer returned fire, but the man continued to flee the area.

After one unsuccessful carjacking attempt, the man was able to carjack a vehicle in the area of Almaden Boulevard an Park Avenue, police said.

Officers pursued the vehicle onto the freeway, and the California Highway Patrol responded to aid in the pursuit, police said.

During the vehicle pursuit, the man attempted to drive into an officer in the area of Carling Court and Edenview Drive, and the officer fired at the suspect, police said.

The vehicle pursuit continued until the suspect was involved in a crash with another vehicle in the area of Almaden Expressway and Branham Lane.

The man tried to flee the area on foot but was taken into custody.

He was transported to the hospital for injuries suffered during the pursuit and crash. Police said his injuries were not caused as a result of gunfire.

No officers were injured during the pursuit. The two occupants of a vehicle the suspect crashed into during the pursuit were transported to the hospital after suffering injuries that were not life threatening, police said.
