Miss Sonoma County joins Marines

SONOMA COUNTY, Calif. (KGO) -- The reigning Miss Sonoma County is poised to trade her evening gown for combat fatigues.

Athena Brattin-Cain, 17, leaves next week for boot camp with the Marines.

Brattin-Cain won her crown six months ago. She says she fully expected to go to college, but decided to go in another direction.

She's only one of seven girls from Marin and Sonoma counties to volunteer for military service.
