SALINAS, Calif. -- An elderly man and elderly woman were killed in a shooting that left two other people injured outside of the Social Security Administration building in Salinas Thursday morning, police said.

Around 8:45 a.m., officers responded to a report of shots fired and multiple victims outside the building at 928 E. Blanco Road, police Cmdr. Vince Maiorana said.

Officers arrived minutes later to find four people were shot in a parking lot, Maiorana said.

Two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene, Maiorana said.

A male and a female were also transported to a hospital for serious injuries. One of the two surviving victims has less severe injuries, he said.

The suspect was at the scene when officers arrived and was arrested without incident, according to Maiorana.

The suspect is related to the victims, but Marioana could not specify their relationships to one another.

The weapon used in the shooting has been recovered, he said.

It does not appear the shooting was associated with any businesses or government agencies in the area, he said.

Investigators have been collecting evidence and the Monterey County coroner's office has been called to the scene, Maiorana said.

All of the Police Department's on-duty uniformed officers have responded to the scene, he said.

Monterey County sheriff's deputies and California Highway Patrol officers are responding to calls for service while police continue to

investigate the shooting, Maiorana said.

Police are expected to provide additional details about the shooting during a news conference that is expected to be held at 2 p.m. Thursday afternoon.
