ANTIOCH, Calif. (KGO) -- An 11-year old boy was hospitalized Thursday after he was shot in the chest while playing with a friend in Antioch.

The shooting happened at the Rivertown Place apartment complex near the intersection of I and West Eighth streets. The child, who's expected to survive, was airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center in order to get help as fast as possible.

Officials say 11-year-old Gregory Kent lives in Oakland with his parents, but is staying at the Antioch apartment complex for the summer with his aunt.

The 911 call was made around 11:30 a.m. Police say he was shot in the chest.

Witnesses tell ABC7 News that Kent was very calm and just wanted to know if he was going to be alright.

Kent is listed in stable condition. His injuries are considered non-life threatening.

His aunt says he was shot by a 22 caliber gun. She says he was playing outside at the time and then ran into the house saying he'd just been shot by a friend who then ran off.

Neighbors believe it is just an accident.

"Kids can get ahold of guns," said neighbor Breeanna Harison. "And, you know, one thing can lead to another. You know they're showing off, or anything can happen, and then the gun misfires and someone's shot."

Police say they have not located the suspect and they're following all leads.

His aunt and the neighbor tell ABC7 News they have no idea who the shooter is.

If anyone has information that is related to this case, they can call the Antioch Police Department's non-emergency line at (925) 778-2441.
