Driver falls asleep, crashes into Alameda Creek from Niles Canyon Road

FREMONT (KGO) -- A vehicle drove off of Niles Canyon Road and into Alameda Creek this morning after the 27-year-old driver fell asleep at the wheel, according to the California Highway Patrol.

At 5:05 a.m., CHP received a call about a vehicle that was in Alameda Creek.

"When he woke up half way through a turn and overcorrected swerving to the right and ended up in the creek," Officer Derek Reed with the CHP said.

The man was able to break through the already damaged windshield of his gold Chevrolet Cruz, and rescue himself from the creek.

"When he swam to shore, he actually received a couple cuts from the rocks," Reed said.

The man was transported to a local hospital where he was expected to recover.

On Saturday, 18-year-old Jayda Jenkins crashed into Alameda Creek from Niles Canyon Road during a strong storm. The Tracy teen's car has been recovered from the creek, but the teen has not been located.

"On saturday the water was 8-9 feet higher than it was now. I mean it was a lot closer to the roadway. Today he was lucky that the if it would have been Saturday it could've obviously been different," Reed said.
