CONCORD, Calif. -- Concord City Attorney Mark Coon died Tuesday morning in Walnut Creek, according to police and city officials.

Concord police Cpl. Chris Blakely confirmed Coon's passing. Blakely said Walnut Creek police are providing further details on his death, but no other information had been released as of late Tuesday afternoon.

Tuesday night's city council meeting has been canceled and grief counselors have been made available to city employees, according to city spokeswoman Leslye Asera.

Coon has served in various roles in the city since 2002. The Concord City Council named him city attorney in 2012 after he served in the capacity on an interim basis.

"I have known Mark for many years and respected him both as a city employee and as a friend," City Manager Valerie Barone said in a statement. "The city has suffered a great loss that will be felt for many years. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time."
