Crews extinguish fire under Hwy 880 overpass in Oakland

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Firefighters have put down a grass fire that was burning under an Interstate Highway 880 overpass in Oakland, according to a fire dispatcher.

The fire was reported shortly before 4 a.m. near 16th and Wood streets. It was producing smoke that was visible from the highway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fire was extinguished about 40 minutes later, according to a fire dispatcher. There was no damage to structures or injuries reported.

The blaze was believed to be a homeless encampment fire that got out of control.
