PITTSBURG, Calif. (KGO) -- Officials are investigating after a fatal shooting shut down all westbound lanes of Highway 4 in Pittsburg Tuesday night. The highway was reopened early Wednesday morning.
The shooting happened at 8:15 p.m. on westbound Highway 4 near Railroad Avenue.
The victim's car crashed through a fence onto California Avenue, which runs parallel to the freeway.
The victim's car came to a stop on California Avenue near westbound Highway 4. Police said a gunshot was fired at the car when it was traveling on Highway 4.
Police later found the vehicle near a fence. "He walked up to the vehicle, noticed that the subject had been shot at least once. He is deceased and as far as we can tell he came off the freeway and collided with a fence," Pittsburg Police Department Capt. Ron Raman said.
Police said it's very likely gunshots came from a passing car, but can't confirm at this time where exactly the gunshots came from.
This marks the eighteenth shooting in the East Bay since November and the third on Highway 4.
Officials are working to confirm the victim's identity.
Officials are asking anyone with information about this shooting to call the California Highway Patrol.
