MILPITAS, Calif. (KGO) -- A man accused of kidnapping a 3-year-old boy from a library in Milpitas appeared in court Tuesday.

Alfonso Edington returned to jail after the hearing in San Jose.

A judge set Edington's bail at $100,000 and he's expected back in court next week.

Prosecutors believe Edington was a stranger to the child he's accused of taking last Friday. "Over 100 people were interviewed. So there's a lot of evidence we're still going through, so as we progress through this we'll learn a little bit more about the motives and about the why," Santa Clara County Deputy District Attorney Brandon Cabrera said.

Police credit an alert VTA bus driver with spotting the child and the suspect on a bus.

The driver called police as he pulled into the Fremont BART station and that's where officers arrested Edington and found the boy.
