PETALUMA, Calif. (KGO) -- A man was crushed to death when he tried to stop a large metal pipe at a construction site west of Highway 101 in Petaluma Wednesday morning.

The accident happened around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. The victim is a 29-year-old pipe layer and his name has not been released. He worked for Maggiora & Ghilotti Inc. for more than eight years.

It happened about 100 yards away from the highway. There is a fence that lines the perimeter and it stopped the pipe after it rolled over the man.

The construction work is being done to widen Hwy 101 to three lanes in each direction.

Cal/OSHA will be investigating.
