Massive computer outage affects DMV offices statewide

FREMONT, Calif. (KGO) -- The DMV is still dealing with computer problems statewide. Systems at fewer than half of the DMV's offices, just 87 total, are working properly.

The empty party parking at the DMV office on Fell Street in San Francisco is a tell that something remained amuck.

"It is costing me $35 dollars an hour. And I have been here two days in a row," said Uber Driver Gary Thomas. Thomas can't drive because he needs a replacement drivers license.

DMV offices across the state, including one on Fell Street in San Francisco, have been down since Monday. They're calling it computer systems failure.

DMV employees spoke with customers about the issue.

"Just to come back and make an appointment and they have no estimated time when the system would be back up," said DMV patron Daniela Velasquez

"Obviously there has to be a better system," said another DMV patron.

"I got to go to work. I just took a stupid cab. Cost me $20," said Itak Morad, a driver.

All this, the byproduct of when a computer bug gets in the way of real life, real cars, and real people.
