SANTA ROSA, Calif. -- A pedestrian was killed in a crash with a motorcycle Sunday morning in Santa Rosa, according to police.

Officers responded to Montgomery Drive east of Yulupa Avenue at 5:34 a.m. on report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.

On the scene, they found an unresponsive man in the roadway. He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to police.

The motorcyclist, a 62-year-old man from Santa Rosa, remained at the scene and has cooperated with police. Investigators say that he was headed west on Montgomery in the rain when a pedestrian with a shopping cart walked into the roadway directly in front of the motorcycle.

The motorcyclist was unable to stop or avoid the pedestrian, but he remained upright on the bike and was not injured in the crash.

Investigators say there's no indication that he was speeding or violating any traffic laws when the fatal crash occurred.

The victim's name is being withheld until next of kin can be notified.
