Be prepared for packed roads heading out of town as the holiday weekend has started for many.

Be prepared for packed roads heading out of town as the holiday weekend has started for many.

This weekend will be a record for 4th of July travel since 2010. AAA says gas prices are the lowest it's been in five years, prompting more than 4 million Californians to hit the roads.

Here's a look at gas prices around the Bay Area: in San Jose the average for regular gas is $3.36, it was $4.12 a year ago. In Oakland it stands at 3.39 a gallon right now and San Francisco the average is 3.52 cents. All three cities saw more than a 70 cent drop in prices at the pump compared to a year ago.

Experts also say a stronger economy and rising income has a lot to do with it.

Air travel is also expected to be up this time of year compared to last year. Other modes of transportation such as bus and train are not as popular during this time of year; they saw a loss of ridership.
