Report: Oakland Ghost Ship lease specified illegal use
OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- There are new details involving Oakland's deadly Ghost Ship fire. New documents obtained by our media partners at the Bay Area News Group show building manager Derick Almena planned illegal use of the warehouse from the very start, back in 2013.
An artist collective was not allowed under zoning laws. But, documents show the landlord made no apparent move to stop him. Two months after that lease was signed, the landlord was told that Almena was secretly making alterations to the building that went beyond the terms of the lease. No action was taken.
Three years later, the warehouse burned down killing thirty-six people in the December fire.
