Evacuees worried about homes near Rocky Fire

LAKE COUNTY, Calif. (KGO) -- The Rocky Fire has charred 67,000 acres -- that is nearly 105 square miles. However, on Tuesday evening firefighters gained some ground. It is 20 percent contained and Tuesday's humid, overcast skies helped firefighters continue to make progress.

Nearly 7,000 structures are threatened and there are still mandatory evacuations in place for thousands of people.

Owners of burnt out homes off of Morgan Valley Road are still waiting to examine their property. The fire destroyed 24 homes.

Joyce Carreia, who was evacuated out of Spring Valley, has been at this Red Cross shelter in nearby Middletown for three days. She told ABC7 News, "It's just tiring! You're not in your own environment. You're not able to do the things you normally would do."

Therapists are helping evacuees cope with their anxieties. Virginia Hart from the Red Cross said, "People are kind of up and down when they're in a disaster like this. You can be optimistic at one moment and then totally panicked another."

Bulldozers carved a thick fire line along a ridge to give protection to the Spring Valley community.

"So instead of our crews having to worry about spot fires, they were able to really concentrate on building and improving all the lines they were working on last night," Cal Fire Capt. Steve Kaufmann said.

Cal Fire is expecting winds to pick up from the East. That is when we will find out if the new fire lines will hold.
