San Jose cracks down on illegal fireworks with fines from $500 to $1,000

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- Illegal fireworks have become a major problem in many Bay Area series, including San Jose.

San Jose police are hoping you had a good night's sleep without any interruptions from illegal fireworks, but if you did, hopefully you grabbed a phone.

For the first time in San Jose, you can report illegal firework activity online through the fire department's website.

Police took to social media over the weekend, reminding residents that they are watching. In fact, the fines are more expensive in San Jose than ever before.

"All fireworks in San Jose are illegal, even the ones labeled safe and sane and are approved by the state fire marshal's office are still illegal in most of Santa Clara County, including all of San Jose," SJPD Capt. Mitch Matlow said.

In Moraga, the country club has closed the whole golf course. That's where the city fireworks display is launched.

But residents had been launching illegal fireworks from the grounds.

Police issued a warning this year, threatening to cancel future public displays.

As for those public displays, they're getting ready for one here at Almaden Lake Monday night at 9.

Authorities are urging people to stick with these organized events and to be safe.
