Santa Rosa police said a 27-year-old man was fatally shot as he walked to his car at a condominium complex in west Santa Rosa Wednesday morning.

The shooting happened around 7:25 a.m. in the 2100 block of West Steele Lane, police Sgt. Dave Linscomb said. Residents and medical personnel tried to keep him alive but the man died at the scene.

Police found the man lying on the sidewalk in the complex where he lived, Linscomb said.

The suspect, described as a man in his 20s, walked up to the victim and shot him with a handgun, then fled west toward Apple Valley Lane, Linscomb said.
