Search intensifies for missing kayaker near Dumbarton Bridge

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- Crews from five agencies are in the bone-chilling water of San Francisco Bay, searching for a missing kayaker. He disappeared after capsizing near the Dumbarton Bridge last night.

Crews have launched from the Fremont end of the Dumbarton Bridge, trying to find the man in his 30s. The Coast Guard says they say this is great weather for their search, light winds, calm seas and unlimited visibility. They hope somehow this man survived the night.

There are six boats from Fremont, San Jose, Hayward and Menlo Park.

Fire departments along with the Coast Guard are searching for San Jose resident Kenneth Maldonado. He's been missing since late yesterday afternoon when his friend in a raft, was towing his kayak back to shore after it started taking on water. The kayak overturned with the flotation device still inside. Maldonado hasn't been seen since. Today searchers are breaking up the southern part of the bay into a grid and doing a slow, methodical search.

"Launching this morning is the best time to go out and spend the day and try to canvas the search. But at some point, weather and darkness and the changing of the tide that will dictate how long we will be out here," said Fremont Fire Department Division Chief Diane Hendry.

Fremont fire is also using two drones, which helps them see places they wouldn't normally be able to see from the water. Fremont Fire believes with the resources they have, they will be able to finish their grid search today.
