The American Red Cross Digital Operations Center in San Jose is playing a vital role in relief efforts after the devastating earthquake in Nepal.

When asked in what way social media and digital communications play a role in the effort, Red Cross Chief Communications Officer Cynthia Shaw said, "To have the eyewitness reports from the ground of what's going on, what they're seeing is usually helpful for the responders to plan how to get relief where it's needed. By monitoring these social media posts we're able to take note of where help is needed, where there's misinformation, correct misinformation, and let people know where they can get help."

In the midst of all the grim news, some miraculous stories of survival and rescues have surfaced. "Those positive stories are great to share," said Shaw, "Especially with the affected communities. So they know that there is still hope. In these critical hours, having hope is essential to survival."

When asked why money is needed more than tangible donations, Shaw explained, "If you take a $2 bottle of water. You pack it, you ship it, you transport it in country. That takes a long time and is very expensive. Upwards of $20. But if you take that money in country, you can buy over 50 bottles of water and you can get the help there faster."
