San Jose residents relieved after alleged car shooter arrested

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- A man has been arrested for nearly a dozen roadway shootings in San Jose that have happened, apparently at random, along Blossom Hill Road. That's a major corridor in San Jose.

For neighbors in South San Jose, an ongoing nightmare could soon be over.

"It's just relief, you know, that he was actually caught," said San Jose resident Debbie Beaird. "And we can kind of take a deep breath."

On Wednesday night, police arrested Michael James Lee Lewis of San Jose.

He's accused of shooting at multiple occupied vehicles along the Blossom Hill Road corridor.

"You can't even go outside without being scared that somebody is going to shoot you for nothing," said San Jose resident Maria Pando.

Back in mid-August, police initially placed Lewis under arrest for unrelated charges.

Sgt. Enrique Garcia tells ABC7 News that while out on patrol that night, an officer noticed Lewis' car, a black Dodge Charger, and felt something just didn't seem right.

"He sees the car parked, blacked out, in a parking lot, so he basically circles around, makes a u-turn, comes back, approaches the car, gets out of his car, and approaches on foot," he said.

A chase followed.

With the suspect eventually surrendering to police.

Detectives later obtained a search warrant for Lewis' residence where they discovered a handgun and shell casings that they say connect him to at least four of the 10 shootings.

"Of all of these poor people, it could've been me, it could've been one of my kids, it could've been someone from the family, you have no idea what it does to parents when we hear the ambulances out there," said Pando.

No one was seriously injured in these shootings, which occurred over a three-month period.

Lewis is due back in court Friday afternoon.
