HAYWARD, Calif. (KGO) -- The start of the school year should be a bright beginning but, instead, students at James Logan High School in Union City are confronting the loss of two well-loved teens killed in a weekend car crash.

A vigil took place for a second straight night on Monday to remember Joe Junior Ioramo and Izaiah Mease.

There will be grief counselors on campus Tuesday because the students have learned one of life's most difficult lessons - life is short.

The grieving sister of Ioramo spoke to a crowd of hundreds. "Junior held on for a long time. He held on for almost 24 hours, just fighting for his life," Danielle Ioramo said.

The James Logan High School student was one of two teens killed in the crash on I-880 in Hayward Sunday morning.

"It's tough but he's up there. He's our new guardian angel," a friend said.

Surrounded by family, Danielle asked Junior's friends to come forward. "He had one of the most beautiful souls I've ever met. He always just wanted to make you smile," another friend said.

Earlier on Monday, friends of senior Mease, the driver of the car, paid their respects at the large memorial on campus.

"I love them both. They're just funny, strong, big hearts," friend Brenden Sinigayan said.

A third teen, Izaiah Pao Pao, is recovering at the hospital while many face the beginning of the school year, short two bright smiles.

"If there's one thing I can never forget about June, he always put a smile on my face and he always knew what to say just to make things better," another friend said.

CHP is investigating the crash.

Ioramo's first grade teacher started a GoFundMe page to help his family with funeral expenses. Click here to donate.
