WALNUT CREEK, Calif. (KGO) -- Walnut Creek Police are investigating whether or not a family was targeted in a home invasion robbery.

Police say the two suspects armed with handguns passed right by a couple's young son playing outside and entered an unlocked side door.

The home invasion robbery happened just before 9 a.m. on the 2800 block of Oak Grove Road.

Police say this type of crime is especially rare for Walnut Creek. They're now investigating if the family may have been targeted.

"They ordered the family to do what they say, get on the ground and cooperate," said Lt. Jay Hill.

"They got what they wanted and they left," he continued.

The suspects ran down Oak Grove Road, then possibly got into a tan or gold minivan on Cedro Lane, according to a witness who called police.

"Walnut Creek is certainly a safe city and a crime like this is very rare, violent crime especially home invasion robberies is something that we don't see very often probably not more than about once a year," said Lt. Hill.

A neighbor tells ABC7 News he turned over surveillance video to police that he believes shows the suspects casing the house from across the street.

He says another neighbor has surveillance video that shows them even more clearly.

Police released a vague description of the suspects.

"A black male adult between 20 and 30 years old wearing a grey hoodie with jeans, the other suspect had some sort of a mask over his face, I don't know if it was a surgical mask or handkerchief from the nose down and he was either a light skinned black male or hispanic male adult," said Lt. Hill.

Police say the victims did not recognize the suspects.
