HAYWARD (KGO) -- A woman and an infant were seriously injured in a crash at the entrance to the freeway on-ramp in Hayward Wednesday, according to a California Highway Patrol spokesman.

The cause of this accident is still under investigation. One thing is clear, the street light that shines over the crosswalk is out and that may have been a contributing factor to this accident.

The CHP says a woman pushing her one-year-old baby in a stroller was struck in the crosswalk by a white SUV. She was trying to cross the northbound I-880 on-ramp at Tennyson Road, where vehicles are accelerating to get onto the interstate.

The woman and her baby were taken to the hospital with major head injuries and they are in critical condition.

"Speeds at this time are still under investigation. We're looking for additional witnesses that may have been in the area," CHP officer Colton Kropp said. "And we're basically going to put those together with the driver's statement."

The CHP says the 22-year-old female driver of the SUV is cooperating and drugs or alcohol have been ruled out.

The on-ramp to northbound 880 has re-opened.
