OAKLAND, Calif. (KGO) -- One person has died following an officer-involved shooting early Sunday morning in Oakland.
Officers driving near 55th and Fairfax avenues around 4 a.m. spotted a vehicle wanted in connection with a July 12 home invasion robbery and pistol whipping on MacArthur Boulevard.
Police officials said the driver of the wanted silver 2001 Volvo C70 failed to stop, inciting a police pursuit.
Officers briefly lost sight of the Volvo, then found it again near 105th and Edes avenues.
Police Officer Johnna Watson said the suspect fled on foot in that area, into nearby yards. Thick fog grounded the police helicopter, so they asked the Alameda County Sheriff's Office for K-9 unit support.
Officers established a perimeter in the area, and with the help of a K-9 unit found the suspect and shot him. Police say the 20-year-old suspect died at the scene.
The Alameda County Sheriff's Office confirmed that a deputy opened fire on the suspect. The deputy accused of fatally shooting the suspect has eight years of experience with the Alameda County Sheriff's Department. When asked why he shot the suspect, police didn't give any details except to say that the man was wanted in connection to a violent crime. Police are still searching for a firearm. "We want to make sure that we have searched every area that we believe the suspect may have entered," Watson said.
Neighbors just want the cycle of violence to stop. "It makes me very much concerned that those types of things happen because there's not only my son, but there are other small children in this area, you know, want more out of life," East Oakland resident Marvis McCladdie said.
No officers or deputies were injured in the incident.
According to Watson, investigators are still processing the crime scene. The Oakland Police Department's Homicide Section, along with the Alameda County District Attorney's Office and the sheriff's office are investigating this shooting.
Anyone with information that could assist with the investigation is asked to call the Homicide Section at (510) 238-3821. Anonymous tips can also be called in at (855)-TIPS-247, or by texting the words 'TIP OAKLANDPD' to 888-777, followed by the tip message.
