A picture of a dog chasing a truck that just abandoned it has gone viral on social media.

Lorie Hollis, who witnessed the whole thing happen at a gas station, told the Humane Society of Louisiana, "The first man told the dog to: 'Go! Go over there!' The man in the back of the pick-up proceeded to pull up the tail-gate of the truck."

Hollis went on to explain the dog appeared confused and tried to jump back on the tail gate but the truck took off. That's when the dog followed it even after the truck crossed two lanes of traffic.

She followed the dog but lost track of it in traffic. "My heart is broken, and I am in shock that someone would treat a dog like this," Hollis said.

She posted the picture of the dog chasing the truck on Facebook where it immediately went viral with hundreds of shares.

Humane Society director Jeff Dorson told ABC News the owners of the German shepherd mix, apparently named Butterball, have been found.

"A local reporter found the owners, and we've discovered it's not uncommon at all for this family to abandon the dog at the station and let it chase their truck," Dorson said. "They've done this multiple times and apparently think it's no big deal, and they don't seem to care about the welfare of the dog."

Hollis said when she approached an employee at the gas station about the dog, she was apparently told, "The dog lives in the hood, and you need to mind your own f****** business."

ABC News contacted the Shell station for comment. An employee who only identified herself as Sandra said, "Everyone is making a big deal, and it needs to stop," and abruptly hung up.
