East Bay woman demands answers after dog escapes kennel gets hit, killed by car

BRENTWOOD, Calif. (KGO) -- An East Bay woman says a local kennel didn't do enough when her dog was killed.

Jessica Campbell can't stop watching videos of her dog Henny. Campbell was moving and needed to board the dog in a kennel, short-term. She found Derty Dog Canine Retreat in Brentwood. "They had great reviews," Campbell said.

But just hours after dropping Henny off Saturday, "We got a call she'd escaped," Campbell said. "Our hearts dropped."

Kennel staffers say the dog jumped a fence and took off.

Campbell was panicked. She drove to help search but she said no one seemed concerned about finding her beloved pet.

So she made an appeal on Facebook to help find her dog. Sadly, someone did on Monday morning.

"They found her on Brentwood Boulevard," Campbell said sadly. "She'd been hit by a car. She passed away."

Henny was located just 500 feet from the kennel. Campbell has placed a wreath there.

Last year, another dog named Bella escaped from the same kennel and was tossed, or fell from the Antioch Bridge. She was badly injured, but alive. At the time, kennel owners denied responsibility.

Derty Dog owner Colton Ross denied our request for an interview but addressed his critics in an emotional Facebook Live post.

"Now that this has happened, I plan to redo fencing on the back side of the property," he said. "It's my worst nightmare come true."
