Sunnyvale dog stolen, put up for sale online

SUNNYVALE, Calif. (KGO) -- Sunnyvale police are investigating the theft of a dog that ended up for sale online, hours after it went missing. Thankfully, good detective work reunited the dog with her owner.

Trina is a 13-year-old blind, partly deaf shih tzu with a heart murmur. Someone snatched her in Sunnyvale.

Her owner, Teresa Amador panicked, saying, "I got worried because she's very sick and so I called the police department. I called the humane society."

Amador says somehow Trina got out through the front door, went through the yard and got on the other side of the white picket fence lining the front yard. She walked down the sidewalk and that's where a neighbor spotted the little dog with three people.

Amador called her friend Sara Kees for help. She joked, "We call her the pet detective now."

"We were distraught. Immediately, I called my supervisor and told her I was going to take the next day off to find her," Kees said.

After 80 posters were put up in the neighborhood, there came a break at a local pet store.

"The manager came up front and she said, 'Absolutely. That dog was here yesterday,' with the woman who bought Trina," Kees said.

The manager gave the contact info for the customer who'd come in with Trina.

"That was the break that we needed and that's when Teresa was able to contact the police department again," Kees explained.

The people who had taken Trina had posted her for sale on OfferUpNow.com. A Sunnyvale police officer stayed after hours to help broker Trina's return from the woman who had bought her, not knowing she was a lost dog.

"For even one of them to take the time to help us get Trina back, it is pretty amazing," Kees said.

Trina returned home in time to take her necessary heart medication.

"A friend Liz said, 'If I go missing, please put Sara Kees on the case,'" Amador said.

This case is ongoing as police look for the dog thieves.
