San Mateo police investigating murder-suicide after suspect barricaded in apartment, officials say

SAN MATEO, Calif. (KGO) -- The San Mateo Police Department is actively investigating a murder-suicide that began on Monday morning.

Officials say a suspect killed a man around 7:20 a.m. in the 1700 block of Pierce Street and minutes after the homicide, officers located the suspect in his residence in the 1600 block of Marina Court.

San Mateo police, the North Central Regional SWAT Team and the Crisis Negotiation team immediately began negotiations with the suspect.

After nearly four hours, officials say the suspect refused to surrender and died by suicide inside his home around noon.

Officers learned the suspect's wife was inside the home with him and was unharmed.

The investigation is ongoing and the reason for the homicide is still unknown.
