PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania -- Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton's primary rival, was positioned to cast the final votes for Clinton at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia Tuesday.

He gave all of Vermont's votes to Clinton.

"Madam chair, I move that the convention suspend the procedural rules. I move that all votes, all votes cast by delegates, be reflected in the official record, and I move that Hillary Clinton be selected as the nominee of the Democratic Party for president of the United States," Sanders said.

Delegates erupted in cheers after Sanders made the declaration, and the announcement was made that Clinton won the nomination.

Not all of Sanders' supporters were ecstatic about Clinton's victory. At least one was seen crying on the convention floor:

The move by Sanders was an important show of unity for a party trying to heal deep divisions.
