Princess Project's annual prom dress giveaway kicks off in Bay Area

SAN FRANCISCO -- Prom season is almost upon us and for the twelfth year in a row, a San Francisco nonprofit is giving away dresses to Bay Area teenagers.

The Princess Project's annual giveaway kicked off on Sunday. Since 2002, the nonprofit has supplied more than 20,000 dresses and accessories to Bay Area girls in need.

Organizers say many girls return after high school as volunteers.

"So they've come to get a dress and they come volunteer with us after high school or, you know, to help set up. Just to kind of pay back for what they have received from us before," The Princess Project's Brenna Murphy said.

Sunday was the first of four giveaways in San Francisco. Interested girls must book an appointment online and bring a valid high school ID to get a dress.

The March 7 event is already full, but appointments are still available on March 15 and March 21.
