Giants may adopt culturally sensitive dress code

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- The San Francisco Giants are considering a change management hopes will keep fans from getting offended -- or worse. It comes after an incident in the stands a couple of weeks ago.

The proposed policy change is still in its working stages, but it's clear the Giants organization is listening to its fans.

The Giants are considering a ban on fans wearing certain types of clothing to their games. On June 23, a fan wore a feathered headdress to Native American heritage night at AT&T Park. It was a move that offended Kimball Bighorse -- a Native American and a Giants fan.

"The fan asked what he could do to make her happy and she said to give her the headdress," Bighorse said.

But it didn't end there.

"The police said we were trespassing according to the giants and we had to leave," he said.

Bighorse says things took a nasty turn when police responded to the Giants' request to remove him and his group as guests. Bighorse and a female companion were forcibly removed.

After the incident, the Giants organization met with Native American groups and listened to their concerns.

"They were hurt by the way in which one of the artifacts and one of their sacred items of clothing was being worn by another fan," Giants Vice-President of Public Affairs Shana Daum said.

The team decided to take a second look at its code of conduct for fans and make some changes.

"If they wear culturally insensitive attire they could be subject to removal from the ballpark. So we've added a line about wearing culturally insensitive attire to our game," Daum said.

Bighorse admits, what some may find offensive isn't always clear. He's just happy that his favorite team has at least started the conversation.
