SAN JOSE (KGO) -- San Jose firefighters battled a two-alarm fire across the street from an elementary school. The fire started around 2:15 a.m. and spread into the duplex on Azucar and Carryback Avenue. Flames were shooting high into the sky.
One neighbor jumped into action and helped evacuate the home.
"We just helped get the little kids out -- and their family. They had like five, six adults in there and I think they had like two or three children in there. So we just helped get the kids out. We were yelling to get everyone out. Because the guy hadn't woken up his whole family up yet he was just trying to put it out himself," said Nick Campusano, neighbor.
Firefighters say this does not appear to be a suspicious fire. They are trying to determine if the fire knocked down the power lines or if the power lines falling down caused the fire.
The fire is across the street from Edenvale Elementary. All of the neighbors are expected to be let back in once the power lines are secured and the scene is secure.
The people who live in the damaged duplex will not be let back home anytime soon.
