SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- A group of political heavy hitters are hoping to shake up the San Jose Mayor's race with just three weeks until Election Day.

Current Mayor Chuck Reed Tuesday morning joined former mayors Ron James, Susan Hammer and Tom McEnery to endorse San Jose city council member Sam Liccardo.

The mayors say Liccardo is the best candidate to continue pension reform.

"Like other things in politics, you hear about a lot of great plans," McEnery said. "We need someone who can implement those plans who has the courage and commitment to do so."

"Since his endorsements came about months and months ago, we have received the endorsement of the last five police chiefs going back here 20 years," County Supervisor Dave Cortese said.

Cortese has the support of law enforcement.

The race between Liccardo and Cortese is a dead heat, with one-third of voters still undecided.
