SJPD find vehicle involved in fatal hit-and-run collision

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KGO) -- San Jose police have found the car, but not the driver, involved in a fatal hit-and-run collision with a bicyclist.

The vehicle, a red Honda Del Sol, was involved in a collision reported in the area of South Winchester Boulevard and Driftwood Drive near Loma Verde Drive at 12:10 a.m. on Friday, police Officer Albert Morales said.

Responding officers found a man who was on a bicycle suffering from serious injuries and emergency crews pronounced him dead at the scene, Morales said.

Witnesses saw a red Honda drive off headed northbound on Winchester. A red car with extensive front end damage was found Friday morning by workers at Victor's Taqueria, about two blocks north of the crash site.

The restaurant was closed overnight, so no one saw the driver abandon the vehicle.

"I reported it. And then the police came in and said the car was involved in an accident, a hit-and-run. I didn't know then, then he told me somebody was killed with that car. That really shocked me," said Victor Bailon Victor's Taqueria

Bailon says an officer told him a bottle of beer was found inside the Honda Civic. The front license plate apparently fell off and was also found inside the car.

The car was found around 8:45 a.m. when officers responded to a report of a red vehicle that matched the one involved in the collision, he said.

The vehicle was found unoccupied will be held as evidence. Officers are still working on identifying and locating the suspect, according to Morales.

The manager at electronics repair shop Mobile Kangaroo next door shot video of a truck preparing to load and move the car.

Miguel Gonzalez says police have been cracking down on speeding along Winchester Blvd.

"A police officer with a motorcycle has been stopping cars lately because they drive on this street over 40, 50, 60 miles per hour," said Gonzalez.

However, enforcement efforts did not prevent this accident. this neighbor has a warning for bicyclists.

"If they're out here at night, be very careful because people fly down this street quite a bit. I try to stay off the sidewalks at night around here," said Caleb Wiegman, a San Jose resident.

The death marks the city's sixth traffic fatality this year, according to Morales.

The Santa Clara County medical examiner's office is working to identify the deceased man and notifying his next of kin.
