SAN JOSE (KGO) -- The city of San Jose has officially launched a citywide database of surveillance cameras.

The city council signed off on the voluntary registry last fall. The goal is to have residents and business owners voluntarily register their surveillance cameras. Police say the network could be a useful tool in fighting crime and will save valuable time for police officers during investigations. Officers will not have access to live security cameras or video, unless the owner gives them permission.
