SANTA ROSA, Calif. (KGO) -- Santa Rosa residents are holding a city-wide garage sale for North Bay Fire survivors. The big selling point is that all of the items are free.

"I bet every house in Santa Rosa that survived this has things that we could help those in need," said Diane Madero, Santa Rosa resident and garage "sale" organizer.

Madero's home was spared in the fires. She had to evacuate and it made her reflect upon the number of household things people lost, not just the houses.

"My home is full of 40 years of buying and collecting and I thought 'How would anybody where would you even start?" Madero noted.

She put the idea out to a few people and several women started organizing.

"To me it was easy it was the least we can do," said Santa Rosa resident Monica Vincent.

Now hundreds are participating.

"I've probably put in 50 miles in my neighborhood walking around telling neighbors handing out flyers," said Madero.

She's collected new and gently used items, but Madero would like to make the experience retail like. She's asking for volunteers to donate tables to set-up and shopping bags.

Neighborhoods all over the Santa Rosa area will have giveaways: Junior College, Montgomery Village, Saint Frances Acres, Bennet Valley, Windsor, and Rincon Valley.

The women realize that people are living in temporary housing or hotels without much storage. But, they're hoping people will take items that are comforting.

"Something to make you feel like you have a home, you know, even art. We have people that have donated art," said Vincent.

They plan to do this again once homes are rebuilt. The event is from 9 to 2 Saturday and will be based on an honor system that people are actually fire survivors.
