MOSS LANDING, Calif. (KGO) -- A team of scientists made an unexpected discovery when they explored an earthquake fault that runs just outside Monterey Bay.

A shipwrecked barge was discovered about a mile below the surface.

Scientists sent in an unmanned submarine and got images of the barge. Printed on the hull was the name of the ship -- The Umpqua Two from Reedsport, Oregon.

The barge went aground in 1982 and ultimately sank about 12 miles southwest of Santa Cruz.
