WASHINGTON, D.C. (KGO) -- Two Bay Area kids are competing in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

Meera Suresh, 12, attends Hyde Middle School in Cupertino and Timothy Yue, 13, goes to Dorris-Eaton School in Walnut Creek.

The preliminaries run through Wednesday and the semifinals and the finals are on Thursday.

There are 285 spellers competing for a first prize of $30,000.
