San Francisco to spend 1M to fix SFO seawall

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- San Francisco is poised to spend more than $1 million to fix what city officials are calling an imminent threat to San Francisco International Airport.

The issue is an eroding seawall and with winter rains just around the corner, time is critical.

The section of seawall in question is near runways 19R and 19L.

Damage from the erosion is so severe that engineering consultants say the seawall is in critical condition. likely to fail and allow flooding.

Supervisor Katy Tang is on the Committee on Budget and Finance, which approved SFO's emergency declaration today. It is the first step toward getting the repair work on the fast track.

"I do believe that for the safety of everyone flying in and out of SFO, this absolutely should be done," said Tang.

San Rafael based The Dutra Group has been hired to do the repairs, which could start as early as next month.

It's a $1.5 million job, one that will be done exclusively from the water.

Crews will be using barges, boats and cranes to shore up the seawall.
