SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- ABC7's 24th annual Give Where You Live Thanksgiving food drive is helping Bay Area food banks serve those in our community who aren't sure if they have enough food for themselves or their families.
ABC7 News Weather Anchor Spencer Christian was at the SF-Marin Food Bank in San Francisco on Monday with a look at just how critical this holiday campaign is.
The food bank is aiming to distribute 10 million meals to hungry families for the rest of the year to make sure they have special meals for the holidays.
On behalf of ABC7 and our parent company Disney, ABC7's Spencer Christian presented a check for $15,000 to the food bank's executive director Paul Ash. "$15,000 means 45,000 meals and the $15,000 will take a big bite out of the $8 million we need to raise in the next 50 days," Ash said. "We're going to use that over the next year to make sure we're feeding people all year long."
SF-Marin Food Bank saw 30,000 volunteers last year, some as young as four! Their combined effort is equal to 71 full-time staff. Monday night's volunteers from Munchery and Riverbed are sorting and replacing ears of corn to be distributed to 450+ community partners and pantries.
Over 107,000 meals worth of food go out each day, reaching more people than ever before.
