SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) -- San Francisco police will hold a town hall meeting Thursday to discuss a shooting involving Ofc. Kevin Downs.

Downs was shot in the head last Friday by a man who was allegedly threatening shoppers at the Lakeshore Shopping Center.

Downs survived and is recovering, but the suspect who was shot died Sunday.

Surveillance video helped officers identify the suspect as 26-year-old Nicholas McWherter.

Sources said McWherter was apparently struggling with mental health issues the last couple of months.

Those same sources say his parents tried unsuccessfully to help him.

The meeting will be held to provide an update on Downs' condition and what police have learned.

It's being held at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center at 19th Avenue and Sloat Boulevard at 6 p.m. on Thursday.
