California snowpack exceeds levels in years

LAKE TAHOE (KGO) -- The snowpack is now higher than average for this time of year in the Sierra.

It's been a while since we could say that, but our drought is far from over.

The California State Department of Water Resources said recent storms have given California snow levels we haven't seen in several years, with electronic readings showing the snowpack at 112 percent of average. Last year at this time, it was about half as deep.

Skiers and resorts are loving the results. "The conditions are awesome. It's actually pretty cold out here, which is great for maintaining the snowpack and the snow that came in over the past two days. We got a 57 inch snow total, which is awesome," Sierra at Tahoe spokesperson Thea Hardy said.

The California Department of Water Resources will conduct its first manual snow survey of the season next Wednesday.
